A 20th male has been charged in what has come to be known as the “Cleveland gang rape case.” Sources close to the case said that the person recently arrested was a minor at the time of the alleged crime but has since reached the age of an adult.
However, he will be charged as a minor; therefore his name will not be revealed to the media.
The male was petitioned to turn himself in to law enforcement in recent days, but has since been released to his parents.
The cases against the 20 males stem from a series of alleged assaults on an 11-year-old Cleveland girl that took place over a three-month period from September to November 2010.
Law enforcement was alerted of the allegations after the Thanksgiving holiday and made the first arrests in February 2011.
Of the 20 charged, 13 are adults; seven are minors.
The case has garnered national attention because of the victim’s age, the number of persons alleged to have committed the offenses against her and because all of the alleged actors in the crime were black and the victim is Hispanic.
The juvenile defendants are being tried separately from the adult cases. Many of the adult defendants are next facing an Oct. 3 court date.
