At times throughout Casey Anthony's murder trial, it has seemed like the defense team has had an advantage by being able to lie and distort evidence as they pleased.
But there is something more powerful than a lie:
The Truth.
"The wicked flee when no one pursues but the righteous are as bold as a lion." (Pr 28:1)
The Prosecution had Truth in their corner, and there was nothing Casey Anthony, Jose Baez or Cheney Mason could do to silence it. We saw defense witness after defense witness quietly fail to support any defense claim, and the defense's entire case went out with a wimper, despite the bravado that Baez showed in closing arguments.
We saw Prosecutors state their case boldly, provide evidence to support it, and close with a succinct, logical and powerful closing statement that undoubtedly resonated with jurors.
We saw the defense team attempt to keep the truth from entering into the trial, as they cast blame on everyone within their sights, as they scrambled to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Casey's lies.
For a month after she killed Caylee, Casey fled. She fled her parents, her brother, responsibility, and ultimately, she fled the truth.
As I watched Casey's face today during Linda Drane-Burdick's closing argument, I couldn't help but think that the anger on Casey's face was there because Ms. Drane-Burdick was putting an end to her final lie before Casey thought it was time. Casey's pattern was to lie until she was at "the end of the hall" at which time she would create a new lie to get her out of the old one. The old lie was then discarded and treated as though it never existed; it served no purpose for Casey any longer. In this way, Casey treated Caylee as she did her lies, and she discarded Caylee when she didn't serve Casey's purpose.
In this trial, Jose Baez and the defense team treated Caylee, and the truth, in the same manner that Casey treated them in Caylee's life and eventually her death: Jose Baez disparaged them, distorted them and discarded them as if they were no more than trash.
Linda Drane-Burdick appealed to the jury's common sense and demanded that Casey's "imaginary friends" be referred to for what they really were: lies that served the purpose of fulfilling Casey's needs. Ms. Drane-Burdick stated the obvious, that lying is what guilty people do to avoid getting caught.
Casey's lies were told to benefit only herself. They didn't represent some kind of alternate reality for Casey to cope with trauma, rather they represented what Casey wanted her reality to be at any given moment, free from responsibility and work.
Caylee Marie Anthony was not afforded very much time in life, nor was she given the love and nurturance that all children need. In death, in this trial Caylee deserved for the truth to be spoken.
Yesterday and today's closing arguments were consistent with everything we have seen from Casey Anthony: the defense team attempted to prevent the truth from entering the courtroom by telling lies, while the Prosecution demanded and insisted that truth take center stage, righteously, and as bold as a lion.
